In church this past Sunday, Pastor Tom’s sermon title was “What is Your Hymn?”  I’ve written about hymns before – here and here.   Growing up in a preacher’s family, hymns have always meant a lot to me.  I play the piano only a very little – but I can play more hymns than any other kind of music.  Hymns are some of the most beautiful and inspiring music in the world.

After Sunday’s sermon, I started thinking about which hymn “fits” what I want my life to be.  What is MY hymn? It’s a difficult question – a question with an answer that changes.

For today, I think God Will Take Care of You is the hymn that most reflects what I want my life to represent.

 God Will Take Care of You
Be not dismayed whate’er betide,
God will take care of you;
Beneath His wings of love abide,
God will take care of you.
Refrain
God will take care of you,
Through every day, over all the way;
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you.
Through days of toil when heart doth fail,
God will take care of you;
When dangers fierce your path assail,
God will take care of you.
Refrain
All you may need He will provide,
God will take care of you;
Nothing you ask will be denied,
God will take care of you.
Refrain
No matter what may be the test,
God will take care of you;
Lean, weary one, upon His breast,
God will take care of you.
Refrain

So, what is YOUR hymn?

    I enjoyed your post and could relate to it. I feel like I know almost every hymn by heart, and they are what I play best and most on the piano too. “It Is Well With My Soul” is my hymn. It goes along with the assurance in your hymn that God will take care of you. “When peace like a river attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows role. Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, it is well. It is well, with my soul.” I love the harmony of the music.

    Lyn – I really love “It is Well With my Soul.” Such a beautiful song and tune.
    Denise – I feel the same way about “His Eye is on the Sparrow.” I believe I could have chosen either of those songs as easily as “God WilL take Care of You.”

    Conclusion: We each have MANY hymns!

    I like all those hymns. “What is your hymn?” reminds me of my frustration with the query “What’s your favorite color?” I think sunlight through green leaves is gorgeous, but I don’t want my cheese green. That said there are certainly some I especially enjoy. Last Sunday the director shortened “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” to two verses: there should be a law against such outrages! Here are five that raise my spirits when I open the bulletin and find them listed:

    “O Young and Fearless Prophet”
    “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”
    “Amazing Grace”
    “Morning Has Broken”

    and, of course, our National Hymn “Oh, Beautiful for Spacious Skies”
