I’m going to save you two hours tonight! You can skip watching the season premiere of AMERICAN IDOL because I will tell you exactly what will happen.  While some specifics are yet to be determined, there are some aspects of the show that are givens.
For instance, at some point immediately after one of the “bad-publicity-is-better-than-no-publicity” contestant’s audition, Simon will lean back in his chair, his expression will display shocked snootiness, and in his British accent, he’ll remark, “Appalling!” He’ll follow that up with something like, “That was reminiscent of someone’s fingernails scraping across a chalkboard.” Oh yes, Simon will be wearing a black t-shirt.
Paula will play-slap at Simon and say, “Oh Simon!” At least once during the auditions she’ll jump up and dance while the contestant sings.
Randy will be ultra-cool, and he’ll throw around words like “Dude!” and “Dawg!” And when someone really bombs, he’ll preface his critique with a declaration of his need to “keep it real.”
Simon, Paula and Randy will sit behind a table, and in front of each of them will be a Coke cup - a very dependable product placement. They will also argue a lot about which contestants will “go to Hollywood.”
Yes, it is very predictable. However, it’s those unpredictable specifics I mentioned at the beginning that will make it watch-able. I will be right there will millions of other Americans watching every minute of it.
