Lyn at Sleepless Juggler had a post recently in which she provided some spellings by first graders and had her readers try to guess the words. This morning I had six “struggling” third grade writers in my room to take a state-mandated writing prompt. I copied some spellings from their papers. Can you guess the words?

Castle, Hotel, Mansion or mention, Any…and after that it gets kinda scary.
TMS: Well, you got the first three right! The others aren’t too scary except for WOIET DICEY. Does it help that the child had “world” after those two words?

casale - Castle
hole tell - Hotel
menchen - Mansion
eney - Any
difread - different (maybe)
woiet dicey - Oddisey (maybe)
defent - Defend
aleanes - Aliens
TMS: You only missed two! Your guesses for woiet dicey and defent were incorrect.

castle, hotel, mention, any. I agree with utenzi above — the last three are scary. I guess: different, defeat, and aliens. I can’t even begin to guess on the two-word one.
Okay - you got 5 out of seven. Here are the other two:
menchen = mansion
woiet dicey - Walt Disney

The Walt Disney and mansion ones I missed, the rest I got!
Fun!

I missed Walt Disney. But, I tell you what, it’s a good “context clue” lesson for us teachers. These words are much easier to figure out in context, huh?
TMS: The writing prompt was for them to write about a place they’d like to visit. The Walt Disney child was talking about Florida - staying in a hotel and Walt Disney World.

I can’t resist these! I am writing this offline… my best guesses - the sixth is a bit of a stretch but I’ve seen stranger.
casale - castle
hole tell - hotel
menchen - mention
eney - any
difread - different
woiet dicey - Washington, DC
defent - different (again)
aleanes - aliens
Walt Disney, of course! Shoot.
TMS: They ARE hard to resist, aren’t they?
