In the realm of “much ado about nothing” is the story of Imus in the Morning - a radio show I never watch.  I’ve happened past it on TV at times and wondered who the goofball in the cowboy hat who always looks down and mumbles was, but it was too boring to stop surfing channels and find out.

Now it seems that he said something that was offensive to African Americans.  So, of course, the usual perpetually outraged voices are raised in protest demanding that Imus be fired.   While I agree that he was really stupid and crass in what he said, I wonder where all this politically correct censorship will end.

There was just a news story on TV that Imus has been “temporarily” yanked from the air. It’s amazing how effective the PC censors can be.

Critics Demand Imus Be Fired Over Remarks

He Discusses Racist Statements on Air With Al Sharpton

AP

(April 9) — Don Imus had a hot seat on the other side of the microphone Monday, appearing on the Rev. Al Sharpton’s radio show and enduring more criticism for his offensive comments about the Rutgers women’s basketball team.

Imus issued another apology for referring to members of the team as “nappy-headed hos.” Sharpton called the comments “abominable” and “racist” and repeated his demand that Imus be fired.

“Our agenda is to be funny and sometimes we go too far. And this time we went way too far,” Imus said on “The Al Sharpton Show.”

Earlier Monday, on his own radio show, Imus called himself “a good person” who made a bad mistake.

“Here’s what I’ve learned: that you can’t make fun of everybody, because some people don’t deserve it,” he said on his show, which is nationally syndicated to millions of listeners. “And because the climate on this program has been what it’s been for 30 years doesn’t mean that it has to be that way for the next five years or whatever because that has to change, and I understand that.”

He pointed to his involvement with the Imus Ranch, a working cattle ranch for children with cancer and blood disorders in New Mexico. Ten percent of the children who come to the ranch are black, he said.

“I’m not a white man who doesn’t know any African-Americans,” he said

Imus said he hoped to meet the Rutgers players and their parents and coaches, and that he was grateful for the appearance on Sharpton’s nationally syndicated show.

“It’s not going to be easy, but I’m not looking for it to be easy,” Imus said.

Meanwhile, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and about 50 people marched Monday outside Chicago’s NBC tower to protest Imus’ comments, and an NAACP official called for the broadcaster’s ouster.

Imus made the now infamous remark during his show Wednesday.

The Rutgers team, which includes eight black women, had lost the day before in the NCAA women’s championship game. Imus was speaking with producer Bernard McGuirk about the game when the exchange began on “Imus in the Morning.” The show is broadcast on more than 70 stations and MSNBC, which is owned by General Electric Co.’s NBC cable unit.

“That’s some rough girls from Rutgers,” Imus said. “Man, they got tattoos …”

“Some hardcore hos,” McGuirk said.
That’s some nappy-headed hos there, I’m going to tell you that,” Imus said.

Imus apologized on the air Friday, but his mea culpa has not quieted the uproar.

James E. Harris, president of the New Jersey chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, demanded Sunday that Imus “resign or be terminated immediately.”

Allison Gollust, a spokeswoman for MSNBC, said the network considers Imus’ comments “deplorable” and was reviewing the matter.

Karen Mateo, a spokeswoman for CBS Radio - Imus’ employer and the owner of his New York radio home, WFAN-AM - said the company was “disappointed” in Imus’ actions and characterized his comments as “completely inappropriate.”

I’ve never understood why the term “ho” is so freely tossed about in some cultures.  The way I’ve heard it used so casually, apparently it doesn’t necessarily equate with “whore,”  but it’s still a nasty-sounding word.   However, radio and TV hosts make their money by being outrageous.  Imus crossed the line. His remarks aren’t criminal and they don’t warrant his being fired.  They only mark him as insensitive and stupid.  And those aren’t necessarily bad personality traits for a radio host.  There are lots of radio stations out there.  If Imus offends you - turn the dial.

I hear that word coming from the young crowd today and it doesn’t always mean ‘whore’. But, I think they use it for emphasis rather than being nasty - but I hate it. Kids can be awful, at times. My granddaughter got called a ‘Les’ (lesbian) by an opposing soccer team player because she wouldn’t let the girl get a shot on a ball. She stayed with her constantly.

As for Imus, one time to hear him is too much for me. I don’t care whether he’s fired or not - but he should change his speech pattern. I didn’t like him the first time I heard him, and I would not watch him again.

I man is an icon. If he wants to call women @ Rutgers Hos with nappie hair seems OK with me. Nothing a rapper won’t say. I like nappies with tattoos!!

Sharpton and Jackson have appointed themselves the protectors and defenders of the black race, and yet they fail to be “offended” by the daily demeaning of their race by black rappers. My impression is that they enjoy these opportunities to promote themselves.

Apparently this guy, Imus, whom I have never seen, was hired to be outrageous and politically incorrect on the air. From what I have read, it is what he DOES. Yes, programs such as this are offensive and demeaning, but what they say is protected by freedom of speech in this country. Thankfully we also have freedom of hearing too. If folks didn’t listen to their drivel, they would be out of jobs.

  4. Blue Star Chronicles Says:

Don Imus Goes, Rosie O’Donnell Stays…

MSNBC has caved in to pressures from The Reverend Al Sharpton and The Reverend Jesse Jackson and has suspended Don Imus’ show, Imus in the Morning.
It seems that Imus and/or one of his staff called the Rutgers Women’s Basketball Team a bunc…

  5. Carol Says:

One of the Rutgers players declared she was “scarred for life” because of what Imus said. Poor thing! She’s got a lot to learn about being scarred for life. Imus’ remark was nothing compared to what real life holds.

wonder why freedon of speach doesn’t apply to all?

  7. rosemary Says:

we need to appalled by being Imus’ being fired.

What he said was in poor taste..

    should he be reprimanded?..yes
should he be suspended for a period of time?..yes
should he be fired/..ABSOLUTLY NOT !!!

This isn’t about Imus..this is about freedom of speech and
    a censored press…

If it’s Imus today and then it could be anyone else tomorrow !

Where do we petition to bring Imus back to the public?

    Imus should not be fired!

Reprimanded, yes. The way the media is treating this issue is polarizing the races more than bringing them together. What Imus said was wrong, but how many times have you heard racial slurs from both sides of the fence? And rappers–WOW!

Imus has apologized, even appeared on Al Sharpton’s radio show to do so. Yet, they still want blood.

I predict that Imus will come out of this in better shape than he was before. Too many fans, too many listeners. And, I bet he’ll never make another racial slur.

I think this is ridiculous, and very stupid. We would take so much time into trying to figure this out why he said what he did. He is like that he says what is on his mind. What happened to freedom of speech? In today’s society when we are in a group of African Americans we are scared ourselves, of what we can say and what we cant without offending them. I know that African Americans have special nicknames that they use for each other and they can call each other hos, and say your hair is looking nappy. But can we say that to them? Do we have special language that only white people can use with each other, and if the African Americans use this language they will get fired? NO, we don’t. Why do African Americans feel that they must always prove a point just because they are African Americans??? Why should they be treated differently just because they have different color skin???

Why cant we just see that everybody has the same skin color, why do we have to be black, white, yellow???Whatever.. Do you think god sees a different color?? Who cares if we have straight, curly or nappy hair?? How important is it??? When we have all kinds of colors getting killed over in IRAQ!!!
