Thirteen Reasons I Want AÂ New Computer
Okay - of course I don’t NEED a new computer. I want a new computer. The computer I have is enough to take care of my NEEDS. However, I really really WANT a new computer. It would make my life simpler on several levels. Here are my reasons:
(1) My current computer is seven years old which, by computer standards, is pretty darn old.
(2) It is very VERY slow. We have DSL, but it still is very slow - especially at peak hours.
(3) Something that takes me only a few seconds to handle on my work computer takes me at least four or five times longer on my computer. And I REALLY need to not handle personal stuff on my work computer. I DO make sure that I don’t spend longer than my lunch period handling personal stuff at work, though.Â
(4)Â It is frustrating to spend so much time on something that shouldn’t take that long.
(5) The time I spend waiting for pages to load could be better spent doing something else.
(6) I don’t do many things I’d like to do online because it just takes too long to navigate the pages. So when someone tells me about a great site - I often don’t even try to look at it unless I have the time to wait. . . and wait.
(7) A new laptop would enable me to not be tied to my desk - figuratively speaking.
(8) I REALLY want to write a second edition of my cookbook, but the file is so large that I won’t even attempt it with my current computer. Even opening the cookbook file takes forever. When I wrote the cookbook four years ago, I didn’t have so much stuff on my computer, and it was able to handle it better.
(9) I would like to help my mother with her own book, but again, my computer makes it too much of a hassle. I don’t want to offer something I can’t complete.
(10) I’d really enjoy doing more writing - both blogging and other writing. However, I don’t do it because it becomes so frustrating.
(11)Â I’d like to work on school stuff at home sometimes.
(12) There isn’t enough memory left for some programs that I’d like to use. In order to make it not completely worthless, I had to either delete a lot of programs and files or copy them to CDs. It made it better for awhile, but now things are slowly building up again.
(13) I’m just tired of my old computer, and I want a new computer!  WAHHHHHH!

You’re so right about a laptop freeing you up. It’s more freeing than I ever expected, actually life-changing!

I haven’t worked on my TT yet. It has been a busy day. I hope you get a new ‘puter soon!

I love having a laptop, the only draw back is battery time. It’s great because you can sit in bed, on the sofa or even at Starbucks!
Great TT! Have a wonderful week!

I LOVE a laptop!! I miss mine so bad and it’s all I can do to not run out and buy one right now. It was wonderful. I could putter anywhere!
A 7 year old computer isn’t just darn old it’s ANCIENT! Mine is acting up too - I think it must have a virus or something. Takes forever to load and I can’t access blogspot blogs at all (well sometimes they’ll open up).
Get a new one

Hahaha this is such a great one because I have a 7.5 year old computer and want to get a new one. Mine is slow too compared to mine at work but unlike you, I am bad and do do a lot of stuff online at work if I have finished my work! But I will say I can still blog and look at pictures and surf the net. I even downloaded episodes of LOST and watched them ok!! Still, it would be a lot better if it didn’t have to think so much and the biggest issue it has is itunes.
Mine is up too!

I hope you can get the computer you need and want.

Yep. At seven years old…it’s time to get new hardware. Just be careful when you go out to buy new media for your new computer. I bought media, not thinking about the new machine I had…and everything I bought turned out to be incompatible with my new, much-faster CD and DVD drives!
Good luck on the quest for new technology (says a woman who used the same home computer for ten years before buying a new one last January.)

You DEFINITELY need a new one! I just got a new laptop (as company for my 2 yr old desktop) and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

Yep, it looks like you definitely need a new machine - if only to have more fun. ;o) (and who say that need is less important than any other?)
That said, my computer is 6 years old and I recently just bought some new memory and a bigger harddisk and now I think it’s good for a few more years. Definitely way cheaper than getting a new one.
If it’s just getting too slow, you might think about just formating everything and setting the system up anew. You’d be surprised how much of a difference that can make.
On the other hand, nothing beats the fun of having a shiny new toy…

You would LOVE having a laptop. You are not restricted to one location to use it and it is wonderful. The prices have really come down so go for it!!!

I sure can understand about the computer. It doesn’t take too much before they become old. Computer technology is worse then cars. As soom as you buy one the new tech crap is out making your fairly new one an old shoe. I seem to be able to keep a computer for 4 years and then it is time to go to computer heaven. seven years is pretty good.

Carol, I noticed that I am not listed on the TT blogroll. What have I not done that I need to do to get listed?
TMS: I have no idea. I’ll check and add you ASAP. I don’t know why you’re not already there!

A new computer is unlikely to do much for DSL latency issues unless you’re pumping the DSL through some ancient 10mpbs ISA Ethernet card.
