Edna Mai is a member of our church that has been making sour dough bread for many years. She is a particular good friend of ours. She’s just one of those people that are endearing - thoughtful and funny. She has kept the same sour dough starter going for a long time. She told me how many years - and it was a lot - but I don’t remember the number. I should’ve paid better attention!

Anyway, at church yesterday she gave me a jar of the starter. I had told her a few weeks ago that I really wanted to try it again and that whenever she had some extra starter, to let me know because I’d love to have it. I’m so excited. I had sour dough starter years ago and kept it going for about a year. Then I got tired of three loaves of bread every couple weeks, and I got rid of it. I’m sure I’ll get tired of it again, but I just can’t see myself getting rid of any starter that Edna Mai gave me.
So, I “fed” the starter last night and let it sit until this afternoon. As soon as I got home from school today, I mixed up the dough - putting the extra starter in the refrigerator for another batch in a week or two. I’ve got the ball of dough in a covered bowl, and early tomorrow morning I’ll form three loaves of sour dough bread. I’m not sure how I’ll work out letting it rise for a few hours before baking it - unless I just let it rise all day long. We keep our house very cool - so it probably won’t rise quickly anyway.
Either way, by tomorrow we’ll have fresh sour dough bread. I can’t wait. I may make some cinnamon rolls out of some of it to take to my Mother’s for Thanksgiving.
