I’m an elementary school reading specialist, and so I’m always reading. I also love quotes. Thus I’ve done Thursday Thirteens on various topics related to reading and quotes. There are Thursday Thirteens on quotes about Mothers, quotes from American History, poems to read with children, quotes to write in the sand, my favorite read-aloud books for children, my favorite quotes about reading, and thirteen books for Read Across American week. Here is a second set of quotes about reading that I love:
(1) “To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all of the miseries of life.” ~W. Somerset Maugham~
(2) “The real purpose of books is to trap the mind into doing its own thinking.” ~Christopher Morley~
(3) “Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.” ~Emilie Buchwald~
(4) “A house without books is like a room without windows.” ~Horace Mann~
(5) “To add a library to a house is to give that house a soul.” ~Cicero~
(6) “Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” ~Richard McKenna~
(7) “To read is to empower;
To empower is to write;
To write is to influence;
To influence is to change;
To change is to live.”
~Jane Evershed~
(8) “The more that you read,
The more things you will know.
The more that you learn,
The more places you’ll go! ”
~Dr. Seuss~
(9) “There is no substitute for books in the life of a child.” ~Mary Ellen Chase~
(10) “Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.” ~Chinese proverb~
(11) ”Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” ~Sir Richard Steele~
(12) “Books, I found, had the power to make time stand still, retreat or fly into the future.” ~Jim Bishop~
(13) “A book is a like a garden carried in the pocket.” ~Chinese proverb”

There’s a lot of wisdom in those quotes! I remember someone telling me that a child will love to read if their parents read to them and they see their parents read (referring to the quote about a children becoming a reader on their parents laps). I think that’s true - at least in my experience.

These are great quotes! I love the one about reading is to the mind as exercise is to the body! I think it’s so important to keep learning and challenging yourself and I enjoy reading pretty much anything!!

“Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.” — Groucho Marx
TMS: I love that quote, too! I should’ve included it in this week’s T13. Maybe someday I’ll do a third T13 of reading quotes.

What great bunch of quotes. My favorite is number one, about reading being a refuge.
But I disagree with Richard McKenna (#6). I don’t think the act of reading itself is more important than the content. That’s like saying the act of cooking is more important than the food itself. It’s true that bad cooking can ruin the best food; it’s also true that good cooking can raise ordinary ingredients to great heights. But no level of cooking skill can make garbage anything more than well done garbage.

I just love the two Chinese proverbs. Just found your site via Thursday thirteen which I did for the first time. It’s a nice way to select blogs to check out because of the types of lists they choose. Mine is things that get on my nerves. It was that kind of day. Nice blog. We both chose pink.

Carol, I love these quotes. I especially like the one that a child becomes a reader on the lap of their parents. I think that is SO true and it saddens me that some parents do not read to their children.

Some excellent quotes there. I especially like 3, 5, and 11.

Nothing’s better than a good book. I am amazed when I meet people who don’t read. It’s like they are from another planet!
