Mary Carillo is one of the sports announcers at NBC covering the Olympics in Beijing - and I can’t quite put my finger on why I cringe everytime she starts talking. She seems nice enough, but there is just something about her that is annoying.

Mary Carillo
Maybe it was because last she did some very inane reporting - a little tour around Beijing that seemed pointless. She stood next to this really tall guy - and all you could see for the longest time was her and the guy from the waist down. And then she did a lot of giggling… Just silly fluff stuff.

I couldnt agree more. She is very annoying. I just went on to google who she was because I knew I couldnt be the only sane person annoyed and confused as to how NBC could make such a poor casting decision.

Joe:
I did the same thing for pretty much the same reason but came away with a greater respect for her and her presentation. Funny Huh?

i’ll tell you what makes her annoying. First, she has a deep man voice, her facial gestures are incredibly irritating… and she is arrogant as hell.

oh puleez you guys; get a life! “Is Mary Carillo a lesbian?” Now there’s a profound question for you. Here’s another. Who cares? Is she good at her profession? Well, let’s see. Does she work for a major network? Is she paid for her commentary and analysis on major sports events, like Wimbledon, the US Open, and even, gosh, the Olympics? SOMEONE must think she’s good at what she does and no doubt earning a lot more for it than someone than some air-head blog potatoes Here’s another beaut of a blogservation: She has a “man’s voice”. She does NOT have a man’s voice. She is a woman so she has a woman’s voice. Her voice is deep, not unlike, say, Bacall, Bette Davis, Kathleen Turner, to name a few. She is tall? Really? Woody Allen is short…does this make him gay? Feminine? Annoying? Perhaps to some but who cares? Certainly not Woody Allen.

She has two children. That doesn’t mean she’s not gay or lesbian but who really cares. I think homosexuality is pretty weird and I hate watching it on TV but if that is the way a person chooses to live their life, then it’s there business. I also think when Carillo is jazzed up, she is quite attractive. Check the pic above. She is 51 years old, she looks like she in terrific shape and is an astute broadcaster.

Mary Carillo certainly is annoying and I’ve been forced to use the MUTE button on my T.V. for years when she is covering a match. YAK, YAK, YAK, One would think she gets paid by the word. And that voice; it just grates on your nerves. She’s a legend in her own mind and I can’t see why the networks use her so much when Tracy Austin is a far more capable commentator and her voice is easy on the ears.

Oh, forgot to mention how rude she was whilst interviewing Jankovic after the final. She cut her off repeatedly, most unprofessional. I hope she gets to read some of this stuff!

I have watched the pieces done by Mary Carillo during the Olympics —
traveling the country, meeting people, experiencing the culture of China.
The people she meets always seem warm and gracious in helping her to bring
the story to NBC viewers. Here is what I find so disturbing — while she
feigns politeness and respect for her hosts when taping the stories, she
then returns to the studio and, along with Costas, engages in the most
puerile behavior in presenting the information. The two of them snicker,
giggle, and snort their way to total ridicule of what should be an
opportunity to enlighten and inform Americans about China. Instead, they
raise the “ugly American” bar to new heights. Their juvenile behavior hit a
new low when they compared the amazing martial arts skills of the Shaolin
monks to the 3 Stooges!! Appalling. (I doubt they would be so derisive if
it had been Christian monks in a European setting.) Whatever political
agenda NBC wants to serve in bashing the host country’s leadership, the
people of China deserve better.
In this Olympic year when we have just recently lost that consummate
professional, Jim McKay, the little man Costas is coming up short in more
ways than one. Send him back to HBO where he can play waterboy to his NFL
trio. He loves to hang out with the big guys.
