The Democratic Party’s key words this week are “nuance” and “gravitas.” It’s almost as if the DNC issued a directive telling liberal writers to use those words.

Whether reading news stories or blogs, the word “nuanced” was used repeatedly this last week. Writers were falling all over themselves to talk about Obama’s nuanced thinking and nuanced replies at the Saddleback Forum last weekend.

So now we have a new definition for “nuanced” - at least when it comes to Barack Obama.

New Obama camp definition of NUANCED: “If I say what I really believe, I’ll alienate most rational Americans because they’ll see what a raving liberal I really am, and so I will make long-winded and rambling replies in order to avoid giving a direct answer.”

And it is even funnier that people are seriously talking about how some possible vice presidential choices, such as Joe Biden, would bring gravitas to the young and inexperienced candidate. Well of course they don’t describe Obama as young and inexperienced, but why else would he need “gravitas”? Does that mean that Obama doesn’t provide his own quality and depth of personality . . . his own dignity, and so he must look for that in his running mate?

New Obama camp definition of GRAVITAS: “Oh my God! We got carried away with this guy’s rhetoric and didn’t really check him out and now we need somebody with a clue to keep the ticket from completely going down the tubes!”

Now Obama has shown, once again, that he has either poor leadership skills or his ego is such that he doesn’t want to share the limelight with a running mate any more than necessary. He will supposedly announce his vice presidential selection Saturday morning. Yes, that’s right. He will make an important political announcement on a SATURDAY MORNING. That’s the day and time when most people will be involved in weekend activities - children’s sports, shopping, golf games, weekend trips. No getting dressed for work with the TV news on in the background. No, driving to work listening to the news on the radio. The networks will try to build it up to get people to watch. However, except for die-hard Democrats, few will pay much attention to the announcement tomorrow. Okay, lots of people will pay attention, but after all this silly build-up and making people wait, they’ve squandered a lot of interest. Many are disgusted with the game show “after-the-break” tactics. Not smart.
