A week or two ago, the two grandgirls had come into my office after school, and Sunshine was sitting on my lap. She looked at me and asked where my necklace was. I replied that since my shirt had a high neck I hadn’t worn the cross pendant that I usually wear. I was surprised she noticed that it was missing - and I didn’t realize I wore it THAT often.

Then she asked, “Why do you wear that all the time?”

I struggled to come up with a reply. I had bought the pendant from a seller on eBay years ago. I just liked the way it looked - a little bit different than the run-of-the-mill cross pendant. It has a diamond chip in the center - supposedly. The diamond - if there is one - is microscopic, and I would need a magnifying glass to see it. However, I really enjoy wearing that pendant, and I almost always wear it - occasionally swapping it out for an intial “C” pendant.

Thoughts went through my mind of problems in other countries of wearing jewelry with religious significance - issues I had read and written about. I DO occasionally think of my pendant’s significance as a testament to my Christianity.

Bottom line, though, I like simple jewelry. So, to answer Sunshine’s question, how could I explain why I wear the cross pendant so often?

Before I could say anything, Sweet Stuff answered for me, “It’s because you love God, right, Grandma Carol?”

Carol's cross pendant

“Yes, precious girl,” I replied. “That’s exactly why.”

From the mouths of babes. For the rest of my life, each time I wear that pendant, I will think of Sweet Stuff’s words. A piece of jewelry that had previously been simply a favored piece of jewelry has now become priceless to me with the significance of its meaning and the connection to my sweet grandgirl.

How beautiful! What a beautiful thing for Sweet stuff to say. It brought tears to my eyes. Your roses are so beautiful. I will check out the baked oatmeal. I had cooked oatmeal twice this week which is about average.

Oh Carol. That is so precious. Children are amazing in their simplicity. Bless her heart.
BTW, your roses are amazing. I have a lovely place for roses…..but YOU would have to plant them AND take care of them!!! I have a somewhat less than green thumb.

Thanks, Jane. I’m trying to write down as many of the cute/sweet things the girls say so I will remember them. You’ll have to do the same thing with Zoe after she starts talking a lot.
