I hadn’t thought of this poem in over 30 years. Not sure if I ever passed it along
to my own children. I first read it as a young child then as a teen.
No one in family explained that the little fellow died.
My mother only said she hated that poem and wouldn’t read it.
Later on i realized he passed. But only tonight did it come to me why my
Mum refused to read it to me. Her 3 year old cousin had died of SIDS after his
parents put him to bed. He was the same age as me. 50 years later
we know it’s a genetic disorder. But how painful
for Mum to read. It’s a beautiful piece but oh so heartbreaking!

I recently discovered this poem and began to cry half way through reading it. I am 32, male, and I can’t handle this poem. In no way am I a poetry lover, but this writing touched me deeply.

Hi. I often think of this poem, and had a dream about my mom last. She taught me this poem as a young child and did explain it to me. I can recall vivid visual images going through my mind of things mentioned in the poem as she recited It. It evokes wonderful memories for me, and as I repeated the words today, I could hear my mother’s voice in my head reciting the words along with me.

When I was attending college, I took a film class and chose to do my version of “Little Boy Blue” as my project. My mother so kindly did the narration. It took multiple, multiple times to get it just the way I wanted it. Never did she complain-and i mean it really did take many times. Within a.month, my mom had passed. I now have this wonderful poem on film with my mom’s voice speaking the words, just as i heard them as a child. Since we are in the Memorial Day weekend, i would like to say thanks to Mom for everything. Thank
you for posting.

it was i believe in a film my late mother/father saw when they were young i have copies of various people reciting it and i would love to know if any could tell me but i have to say it is a wonderfully heartfelt poem any information please put on my email address [email protected] thanks

I was first introduced to this poem in AP English class. Our teacher cited it as an example of bad, sentimental poetry. While it may be not be Great Literature, a person would have to have a heart of stone not to be moved by it.

Some say this is not about Eugene Field’s little boy, but that is what my Grandmother told me. She said she learned the poem as a young girl. My Grandmother recited this poem from memory to all us kids from the time I could remember. She told me that the author was a family friend and the as far as she knew the poem had not been published. I was born in 1950 and my Grandmother was born in 1899.

This poem was published before the death of Fields’ son, oddly. It is still a lovely poem about childhood and death.

I’m from St. Joseph, Missouri where Eugene Field lived for some time. This poem was a favorite in our hometown with several places including a school named for the poet. Our library featured a statue of the little boy. Lovers Lane was a popular romantic spot for young lovers and the boulevard system is still beautiful. We were all taught the story that it was about Field’s own child who died.
