It’s only  been a few days short of a year since my last dentist visit.  Yes, I was supposed to go during the winter, and I put it off till spring, and then put it off again until yesterday.  And I religiously brush my teeth.  Alas, I left the dentist’s office yesterday with a report of THREE cavities!  All small - but still there.  So Tuesday I will start the process of getting everything fixed.  I just wish they could put me to sleep until it’s over.  I’m way too old to have all this anxiety over going to the dentist…

I have to go to the dentist on Friday, for a check-up. I’m hoping they give me the all clear. Here in The Netherlands it’s not common practice to give you an anaesthetic when filling your cavaties, and you know what.. Having a needle pierce my gum is the thing I hate most of all about visiting the dentist. I opted for a filling without one last time, and I never felt a thing!

    Perhaps you could try that?

I have completely valid and rational reaons for hatinh visits to the dentist, as I have been assured by two doctors and ONE honest dentist. I will not burden you with the gruesome detail, but simply offer you a few keywords: 9-year-old, oral surgery, incision, anaesthesia, none, blood, ceiling, screaming.

I now have a deal with a dentist: I will go once every two to three years. You will give me two 5 milligram Valium, to be taken before arrival, and give me an appointment so that my husband can drive me. You will not stick any needles in my gums (I agree with you, Mandy!). You will get in and get out.

I am lucky in that I do not get cavities. I brush and floss. But why, in this day and age, must dentistry be painful?

I have had one cavity as an adult– I got it while pregnant with one of my kids. I had not been to a dentist in 12 years. When I finally had the baby and decided to get it fixed, I called my doctor’s husband (who is a dentist) and told him I had a cavity in a wisdom tooth and needed it filled.

He: How do you know you have a cavity?
Me: Because I can put my tongue in it.
He: Oh, my…. Doesn’t that hurt?
Me: Not as much as you’re gonna hurt me.

And that’s it in a nutshell.

Oh, Ms. Cornelius - no wonder you hate the dentist. My hate/fear started about ten years ago when the dentist’s hand slipped and the drill cut a gash in my lip. He apologized, I got up and went to the bathroom and cried for awhile before going back and letting him finish. Since then my phobia has gotten worse and worse.
