Amidst all the uncomfortable-to-watch commercials on TV – the ones about erectile dysfuction, genital herpes, menopause, laxatives and such – we now have one for Amitiza which is a medication for “chronic constipation.”  In the commercial, there is this goofy looking woman waking up in the morning and going into the bathroom.  She smiles and goes about getting ready for work.  As she exits the bathroom, you can hear a toilet flush – just in case we couldn’t understand from all the voiceover comments that because of Amitiza she is no longer plagued by constipation.  She’s all smiles as she pets the dogs and squeezes her husbands nose before she leaves for work.  They try very hard to make her look happy, calm and cute.  She walks around with this stupid looking smile on her face: “Thank goodness I was able to take a dump this morning” is what the smile apparently means.  Meanwhile the voiceover talks about the problems of constipation and how often someone will “go” when they take Amitiza.  It creepy.

Some of the other uncomfortable commercials are funny.  The Erectile Dysfunction (E.D.) commercials generally feature a very good looking and in-shape man and woman who keep giving each other these sly up-to-something smiles, and they often end with the man and woman sitting in separate bathtubs outside enjoying the sunset.  I don’t know – maybe I’m missing something everyone else does, but I’ve never bathed in a tub outdoors.  Don’t think I’ve ever even seen two bathtubs side-by-side at the beach.

And you KNOW that the actors in those commercials were down to their last dime.  Really, why else would anyone agree to be in a commercial about constipation unless they had no other options.   I guess companies that produce laxatives and ED medications and such have to make money, too.  Still – MUST they have such awful commercials?

It’s Esalon, in Big Sur, where Bob, Carol, Ted and Alice was supposed to take place. They are famous for the oceanview tubs.

Ah ha! I learned something new. I had no idea… Once my second husband and I went to a mineral springs spa that had side by side tubs, but they were inside which makes sense since they were in north central Tennessee. Thanks for the info, reddog.

The worst commercial has to be the Viva Viagra commerical with the men sitting around singing Viva Las Vegas, but have changed the words to Viva Viagra. Steve always points out it is a bunch of men with no women in sight. So wierd I’m sure Elvis is rolling over in his grave (maybe not he was a little strange too and would probably need the drug if he was alive at his age – ha ha ha!)

I haven’t seen the Viva Viagra commercial. I’m sure it won’t be long, though, before I do.

Yeah, that Viagra commercial is really dumb. Hey, if you’re a baby boomer, and even if you’re not, come over to my blog. It’s for baby boomers.
