Last night was Sunshine’s preschool graduation. All the graduates wore red caps and gown, did the “Pledge of Allegiance,” a couple of poems and songs. Then the two teachers announced the superlatives. As I listened to some of the superlatives (“Most Athletic” because Johnny is always in motion, always eager to get involved in activities.” In other words, Johnny is ADHD. “Friendliest” because Susie plays with everyone and never argues.” In other words, Susie is a doormat.) Well, those were my interpretations, anyway.
Finally, it was time for Sunshine’s award. Sunshine was given the “Leadership” award because “everybody always wants to do whatever Sunshine is doing.” My daughter asked her teacher later if it was real leadership or bossiness – and the teacher just grinned.
Sunshine can definitely be bossy, but her teacher told my daughter that she’s talked to Sunshine about how she has a responsibility to do good things since the other kids always want to do what she is doing. She has definitely been “top dog” in her class throughout her preschool years. Starting kindergarten next year with a different group of children might be a little difficult for her. However, I imagine Sunshine will remain a leader throughout her life.
Sunshine’s “gradulation” was a memorable event. When the graduates walked out, her face was shining. RT and I have talked since then about how she looked radiant. So proud, so happy, so eager for this milestone in her young life. She can remember Sweet Stuff’s graduation two years ago, and she’s happy to be following in her big sister’s footsteps.
Speaking of Sweet Stuff, the director of the day care center asked her to serve the punch during the reception following the graduation. She was also in charge of handing out programs prior to the graduation. The child THRIVED on those responsibilities. Every person received their program as soon as they arrived, and afterwards Sweet Stuff singlehandedly kept everyone’s punch cups filled with nary a spill. After everyone was served, she filled a cup for herself, got her slice of cake and sat down to enjoy her own refreshments.
After graduation, we all went to “Pie in the Sky” for pizza with Sweet Stuff, Sunshine, their mama and daddy, and Uncle Joey and Aunt Meah. As RT and I drove home later, we talked about what a wonderfully delightful evening it had been.
