Don’t drink my CHARLES SHAW wine - my two-buck Chuck!

A few years ago my niece told me that she’d seen CHARLES SHAW wine somewhere during their travels, and she bought a bottle of it because of the name.  Although my father had nothing to do with the wine or the wine sellers, his name happened to be Charles Shaw.  Naturally, I wanted a bottle of that wine!

Not too long after that, I was watching a TV show and they had a segment on CHARLES SHAW wine - frequently referred to as ”two-buck Chuck” because of its cheap price.  Although it was inexpensive, people raved about how good it was.  With a little internet research, I found that there is even an urban-legend of sorts about it.

I researched it because I definitely wanted a bottle, but I was disappointed to find out that it isn’t sold in my part of the USA.  Oh well.  I figured some day I’d travel to a part of the country that had it, and I’d get a couple bottles to keep as a novelty.

Fast forward to a couple weeks ago.  RT and I babysat the grandgirls for four days while our daughter and son-in-law traveled to St. Louis to visit some friends.  Guess what they saw for sale in St. Louis?  CHARLES SHAW wine.  So they bought a bottle of chardonnay and a bottle of merlot for me as a gift.

I was thrilled.  We opened the chardonnay that evening, and it was pretty good.  I drank maybe two or three sips.  I’m just not a drinker.

I left the next day to visit my mother for a couple days.  A day or so after I returned home, I realized that the CHARLES SHAW wine bottles were nowhere to be found. “Where is my CHARLES SHAW wine?” I asked RT.

“Oh, it’s gone.”

“GONE?!  Where did it go?”

Apparently RT opened the Merlot and enjoyed it while I was gone.  He didn’t understand my upset.  Why not just go to the store and buy another bottle?

BECAUSE THEY DON’T SELL IT IN TENNESSEE.  BECAUSE I’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR IT FOR YEARS AND I FINALLY GOT TWO BOTTLES AND  YOU DRANK IT ALL!  I NEVER EVEN GOT TO TASTE THE MERLOT!  (Okay I wasn’t seriously looking for it for years, but I DID think about it once or twice over the years).

I’ve recovered from my shock that RT had the audacity to drink my Charles Shaw wine.  He hadn’t thrown away the bottles - so I have the two empty bottles which is really all I wanted anyway.

My Charles Shaw was a Methodist minister who frequently had to deal with people who battled alcholism, and he understood the dangers of drinking and saw first-hand the damage it could cause. I wonder what he would have thought of a Charles Shaw wine.  Even though he wouldn’t have tasted it and would have preached against it, I rather think he’d gotten a kick out of it, too.

The New House - Framing In Progress

Here are photos from this past week.  Today was THE most exciting day so far.  The downstairs was framed in enough that I could walk through the house and see where each room would be - the bay window, the pantry, the dining room.  I stood in front of my closet and visualized where I would put each shelf, I stood on the front porch and thought about how much time would be spent there in the future - rocking in rocking chairs, sipping iced tea and watching the sunset.  Fun, fun, fun!

This photo above shows the house just a few days ago.  They were putting the floor in the downstairs.  Notice what a “nice” crawlspace there will be.  I’ve learned that a nice crawspace is very important!

Voila!  Look at what it looked like today:

The main walls are up, and since the floor is complete, we can walk all through the house. I walked through every room a dozen times this afternoon/evening - imagining such things as where each piece of furniture would go and how I would organize the pantry and the kitchen cabinets.

The picture below shows the bay window in the breakfast area of the kitchen.  I know I will spend a lot of time looking out the windows that will be here:

This is ENORMOUSLY exciting!

High-Tech Toilets: Don’t go to the doctor; just go to the bathroom!

There are some new high-tech toilets that do much more than serve as mere receptacles for body waste.  There’s one (cost $3,250 - $4,800) that will give you a mini-physical exam just by peeing in it.

The doctor is in. Japanese builder Daiwa House and Toto, Japan’s No. 1 toilet maker, have teamed up to develop a bathroom that lets users monitor their health. It analyzes urine samples, measures your blood pressure, and checks your body fat.

And then there’s the toilet for the people who are really just too lazy to wipe:

Inax, Japan’s second-largest toilet maker, released this mass-market robo-toilet in May. It features a bidet and a washer-dryer for your backside. And there’s no need to raise and lower the seat. Sensors detect when you’re near and open the lid for you. After you leave, it shuts the lid and flushes automatically.

There are several other high-tech toilets described in the article.  Interesting, isn’t it, how taking care of basic bodily functions is getting more and more complicated.

Attention, Pet Owners! You Have POORER Health!

Aha!  I knew it.  Dogs are NOT good for you, after all!

I’ve never been much of a pet-lover.  However, RT really wanted to get a dog.  So we got Jake three months ago.  Since then I’ve had my sleep messed up virtually every night (since RT insists that Jake sleep on the floor next to our bed) by dog odor and dog noises, there is black dog hair EVERYWHERE, Jake actually has started jumping on top of my car with his muddy feet - keeping it a muddy mess.  I’m dreading all the scratches that are inevitably under all that mud.  (Note: There are indeed some significant LONG scratches on the hood of my car. I just ordered a car cover to use until we get a garage so the dog can’t get to it.) He still pees on the floor occasionally (ok - rarely, but still!) scratches the doors horribly, and chews any bit of paper he can find into shreds all over the floor.

I was so naive at first - I just never considered that RT having a dog meant that I would have to sleep in the same room with a smelly dog every night.  I can deal with the other stuff, but not being able to sleep well really messes me up.

Now there is research to show that, despite all the supposedly wonderful benefits of having a pet,  perhaps having a pet is not such a warm and fuzzy experience all the time.

By Amy Norton
Reuters
NEW YORK (Jan. 10) - While research has suggested that pets can offer people health benefits, a new study from Finland finds that pet owners tend to be heavier, less active and in poorer health than those without a pet.

However, that doesn’t mean pets are bad for us, the researchers note. Rather, people most likely to have a pet, such as middle-aged and home-owners, also tend to be more sedentary and thicker around the middle.

Researchers at the University of Turku in Finland report the findings in PLoS ONE, an online journal published by the Public Library of Science.

A number of studies have suggested that certain people benefit from living with a dog or cat — a pet may help lower blood pressure and heart rate, for example, or ease stress, loneliness and even dementia-related agitation in the elderly.

But whether pet owners as a group are a healthier lot has been unclear. The new findings suggest they’re not.

Using survey data from more than 21,000 young to middle-aged Finnish adults, researchers found that pet owners were generally more likely to be overweight and to view their own health as poor.

This was largely because pet owners tended to be middle-aged, have less education and more health-risk factors, explained Dr. Leena K. Koivusilta, the study’s lead author.

And despite having Fido to take for walks, even dog owners typically got little exercise.

This is likely because they were often home-owners who could simply put the dog in the yard, Koivusilta noted.

The fact that pet owners were in poorer health does not mean that furry companions aren’t a health boon in some cases, she told Reuters Health.

“In my opinion,” Koivusilta said, “pets provide us all with a vast potential for health promotion, and this has indeed been shown when some special groups have been studied.”

Pet owners, according to the researchers, may just need to make more of an effort — such as walking and playing with the dog instead of showing him the way to the yard.

Okay, the study doesn’t prove that Jake isn’t good for me. It just has to do with people not getting out and walking their pets.  I’ll continue to TRY to be a good sport about Jake.  Really, though, TO ME, dogs are just gross!

Flesh-eating bacteria - 24 Hours to Live

According to this article, when a flesh-eating bug took over this economist’s body, it took only 24 hours to kill him.

Doctors watched helplessly as David Walton, 43, was struck down by necrotising fasciitis.

Mr Walton was a member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, which is responsible for setting interest rates.

Following his death last June, Chancellor Gordon Brown called him one of the UK’s leading business economists and a highly respected commentator on economic affairs.

An inquest in Gloucester heard that Mr Walton, who was married with children, was admitted to Cheltenham Generall Hospital the evening before his death, complaining of fever and stomach pain.

Soon he began to show signs of the flesh-eating disease.

One doctor, Warren Doherty, said: It seemed to spread before our eyes, down the thigh, growing up towards the shoulder and chest.

The necrosis was progressing in front of us and it was clear that he would die.’

Mr Walton was moved to the high dependency unit and died there in the early hours of June 21.

Pathologist Dr Keith McCarthy confirmed the cause of death as necrotising fasciitis, caused by the flesh-eating bacteria streptococcus pyogenes.

He said the disease attacked several areas of Mr Walton’s body including his back, groin and legs, causing large blisters.

There was no entry site for the bacteria, but that is not always necessary, he said.

It may enter through a wound, but it can also occur with the infection of an organ – such as the kidneys.

From the way it developed in this case one would assume it started in the urinary tract.’

Gloucestershire coroner Alan Crickmore recorded an open verdict, saying it was impossible to tell whether the infection had started naturally or through an unknown unnatural cause such as an injury.

He developed the signs and symptoms of necrotising fasciitis very rapidly, and, as accords with my limited experience, the progress was so fast that even the doctors treating him were able to describe it as spreading before their very eyes,’ he said.

Necrotising fasciitis is a rare infection of the deeper layers the skin and tissues and requires immediate medical treatment, which may include amputation.

Around 30 per cent of sufferers do not survive.

Streptococcus pyogenes causes a range of illnesses, from mild skin infections to life-threatening diseases.

Infections typically begin the throat or skin and can spread to deeper layers of skin and tissue.

The bacteria has also been linked to pharyngitis or strep throat’ and scarlet fever
