I’m Friday’s Child. Which day’s child are you?

There is a Mother Goose poem that goes like this:

Monday’s child is fair of face.

Tuesday’s child is full of grace.

Wednesday’s child is full of woe.

Thursday’s child has far to go.

Friday’s child is loving and giving.

Saturday’s child works hard for a living.

But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day

Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

Using this calculator, I found that I am Friday’s child.  I think it fits.  Which day’s child are you?

Shar Jackson Defends Kevin Federline’s Parenting Skills

According to this article, Shar Jackson thinks that Kevin Federline is a wonderful father.  Jackson has two children by Kevin - a four-year old and a two-year old.  Brittney Spears also has two children by Kevin - both under 2 years of age.  One thing we know for sure about K-Fed: He is biologically capable of fathering children.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Kevin dump Shar WHILE she was pregnant with the now two-year old in order to be with Brittney?  Perhaps it was a wise “professional” move on his part.  Many people had never heard of Kevin Federline before he pulled that stunt and then subsequently fathered two children by Brittney.  However, how does that kind of behavior align with being an “amazing dad”?

Speaking about her four-year old daughter, Shar provided the best quote of the article:

”He’s an amazing dad,” she said Thursday while shopping for goodies at the Boom Boom Room’s Baby and Big Kid Style Villa, a pre-Golden Globes swag party. “He’s a great dad and if you said his name right now, Kori would go crazy. That’s the love of her life.”

Asked about their daughter’s special bond with her father, Jackson answered: “He was there for her every minute of her life until, you know, we weren’t together anymore.”  (emphasis mine)

Let’s see, that would have been two years of the little girl’s life.  Wonder how much time Federline has spent with her since then?  Shar says:

“He’s a trouper,” says Jackson. . .  ”He knows that everything in life is, ya know, an experience and you learn from it and then you get past it. I’m not worried about him.”

Me either.  Kevin knows how to take care of Kevin.  And it seems he has had quite a few expereinces that he has gotten past.  Don’t know about you, but I’m not ready to give the “Father of the Year” crown to him, though.  It takes more than a sperm donation and the ability to look out for oneself to make a real father.

Cappuccino Mix and Instant Spiced (Russian)Tea

I’m on a roll here with recipes.  My sister, Debi, who is in the non-blogging minority in my family, has a recipe for a really delicious Cappuccino mix.  This is quite yummy for these cold winter evenings.  Here it is:

CAPPUCCINO MIX

1 cup instant coffee (You can use decaf, if you’d like)

2 cups coffee cream (I use the nonfat type)

1/3 cup sugar (I use Splenda)

1 tsp. cinnamon (I leave this out - I’d rather not have the cinnamon flavor)

Mix together.  Use 4 tablespoons per cup of hot water.

Variation: Use different flavored coffee creamers for different flavors of cappuccino.

Okay, let the snow and ice storms come.  You’re ready to face them with this recipe.

Oh?  You’re not a coffee/cappuccino drinker? Okay, here’s a tea recipe from my mother.  This recipe has been around for DECADES!  I remember drinking it as a kid.  It’s wonderful.  My daughter gave me a jar of the mix for Christmas.  It is SO good.

INSTANT SPICED (RUSSIAN) TEA

1 1/2 cups Tang

1 cup lemon flavored instant tea

1 tsp. ground cinnamon

1 1/2 cups sugar (or Splenda)

1/2 tsp. ground cloves

Mix thoroughly and store in a covered container.  Use 1 to 3 tsp. to a cup of hot water.  WONDERFUL!

Fresh Apple Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

This evening we will celebrate both my daughter’s birthday  (2 weeks ago) and my son-in-law’s birthday (2 days ago) with a family dinner.  We’ll have spaghetti and meat sauce, rolls, salad.  For dessert, we’ll enjoy a Fresh Apple Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting.  This recipe is one that my mother-in-law has made for years, and it’s my daughter’s AND my son-in-law’s favorite.  As my daughter says, “It is OH SO GOOD!”  Not too difficult to make - and delicious and moist.

FRESH APPLE CAKE WITH CREAM CHEESE FROSTING

2 cups sugar

1 1/2 cups oil

1 cup nuts, chopped finely

2 1/2 cups plain flour

1 tsp. soda

3 eggs

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. vanilla extract

2 tsp. baking powder

3 cups apples (peeled, chopped finely)

Preheat over to 350.  Grease three 9-inch round cake pans with Crisco and flour.  (I always line the pans with waxed paper, too).

Combine sugar, eggs, oil and vanilla.  Beat well.  In a separate bowl mix the flour, baking powder and salt.  Gradually add the flour mixture to the sugar/eggs mixture.  Finally add the apples and nuts.  Mix well.

Pour into the cake pans and cook for approx. 30 minutes.  You can also make this in a bundt pan and cook for an hour.  (My daughter’s note: “It is the icing that is so good and you get less icing if you use a bundt pan).

Cream Cheese Frosting

8 oz. cream cheese

1 stick butter

1 cup finely chopped nuts

2 tsp. vanilla extract

1 box powdered sugar

Let the cream cheese and butter soften.  Add the vanilla.  Add the powdered sugar a little at a time until well mixed.  Add the nuts.

Once the cake layers have cooled, spread the frosting on them - one layer at time.  VOILA!  Delicious!

Stupidity Abounds - Woman Dies From Radio Contest - Drinking the Most Water Without Going to the Bathroom

Stupidity - both individual and corporate - is alive and doing well in the world.  In this case, a Sacramento radio station had a contest titled: “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” in which contestants were given increasingly larger bottles of water to drink to see who could last the longest without peeing in order to win a Nintendo Wii video game.

WHO thought up such a stupid contest?  And who were the people stupid enough to enter such a contest?

And now a woman - a mother of three who was apparently stupid enough to think she was doing this for her children - is dead.  Yep, her now mother-less kids sure benefitted from THAT contest.

Here’s the story:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Jan. 14) - A woman who competed in a radio station’s contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner’s office said Saturday.

Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.

“She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad,” said Laura Rios, one of Strange’s co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. “She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her.”

It was not immediately know how much water Strange consumed.

A preliminary investigation found evidence “consistent with a water intoxication death,” said assistant Coroner Ed Smith.

John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station’s owner, said station personnel were stunned when they heard of Strange’s death.

“We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred,” he said.

Initially, contestants were handed eight-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.

“They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy,” said fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland. “They told us if you don’t feel like you can do this, don’t put your health at risk.”

Ybarra said he quit after drinking five bottles. “My bladder couldn’t handle it anymore,” he added.

After he quit, he said, the remaining contestants, including Strange, were given even bigger bottles to drink.

“I was talking to her and she was a nice lady,” Ybarra said. “She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for kids.”

And the radio station folks were “stunned” that an idiotic idea that went against basic safety standards turned out badly. As I wrote, stupidity abounds.
