My American Idol Predictions

Before American Idol goes any further, I want to write my predictions. It’ll be fun to see how close they follow what happens. I don’t think any of the guys have a chance except for Chris. I personally don’t care for Chris at all and don’t understand why the judges are so gah-gah over him. However, since they are, I guess he has a shot at it.

So without further ado, here are my predictions:

Mandisa - She’ll be the winner. She has a dynamite voice - can really belt out the songs. She is gorgeous and has personality. Really - have you ever seen such beautiful skin?

Taylor - He’s too spastic - kind of a Ray Charles type jerkiness. He tries too hard to be cute. The gray hair has helped him gain popularity, but I don’t think he’ll last into the final four.

Paris - She’s got a great singing voice - great talent. Her speaking voice, though, is too baby-squeaky. I think she has a shot at being in the final four, though. She was my original choice for the winner.

Elliot - Why is he still there? He doesn’t have a strong voice, and he doesn’t have a strong personality. I don’t understand why the judges are so crazy about him. I would have voted him out the first week.

Chris - He has a shot at winning, although I don’t think he should. However, he’s a rocker, and the judges seems to really like him. I personally don’t care for his singing, though. His song last week was nothing but yelling.

Katharine - She has a shot at winning, too, but I don’t think she will. She has fantastic stage presence and a million-watt smile. I think she’ll be a successful singer - even without winning A.I.

Kelley - She SO overdid the ditsy Southern belle routine the first few weeks that she turned off a lot of people. (E.G. These fake eyelashes are like TARANTULAS… What’s a ballsy?) She toned it down a little last week. Still, I don’t think she has a shot at winning. She may make it three or four more weeks, but she’ll be gone before it gets down to the final four.

Ace - He’s cute and has a good voice, but he’s not A.I. material. He’ll be gone within two or three weeks.

Bucky - He has a distinct voice, which is a godsend for a singer - a voice that stands out from the others. So far, though, he hasn’t used it very well. He doesn’t have a shot at winning and unless he makes enormous improvements he’ll probably be gone within two or three weeks.

My prediction for the final four: Mandisa, Katharine, Paris, and Chris.

All right - bring it on. Let’s see how these predictions stand up to reality.

Sunday Seven for March 27 - April 2

Seven things about my life between March 27th and April 2nd:

(1) It was my spring break week.  It was nice to be off work for a week - a definite perk of being a teacher.

(2) I spent a lot of time on the land - walking, photographing wild flowers, helping PawPaw do various chores like wrapping a chain around a rock so he could pull it out with the bulldozer, burning brush piles, and making lunch runs to Subway.  My photographs didn’t turn out too well.  I am going to look for a new camera - something I will need on our trip to Alaska in September.

(3) I took Sweet Stuff and Sunshine to Georgia to visit my mother.  They were so excited to see Grandma Ruth, and I was pleased to see that she was looking better and stronger than she had been the last time I visited. (She’s had several surgeries during the past year).

(4) I had intended to stay in Georgia until Sunday afternoon, but I left Saturday evening instead because the girls were ready to get back home to their mother (my daughter).  That meant I missed hearing my mother preach this morning at the local Methodist church.  I’m hated to miss her sermon, but I’m still glad I came home because it gave the girls today to be with their parents before getting back into the school/work routine tomorrow, and it gave me a chance to get settled a little bit before going back to work tomorrow.

(5) Sunshine fell asleep in my arms Friday night, and I held her for several hours while I talked and visited with two of my sisters, one brother, a niece and my mother.  It was very tender to look down and see Sunshine’s peaceful and content face as she slept in my arms.

(6) This morning I went to church with PawPaw.  The sermon was about laziness and greed (sloth and avarice - two of the seven deadly sins).  I have problems with both.  I will probably write about one of his quotes on laziness.

(7) I made chicken and dumplings for my family for dinner Friday night, and when I wrote an email to my extended family inviting anyone who could to come over and eat, I got an email response from my nephew who is in the army stationed in Germany saying he wished he could be there - that one of the things he’s looking forward to when he comes home is a good home-cooked meal.  I wish I could send him some chicken and dumplings.

My Cruel, Callous and Mean-Spirited Opinion about the Winkler Murder Case

(Update, 6/12/06 - for new information on this case, click here)

Last week I wrote about my speculations concerning the murder of Matthew Winkler.  In that post, I mentioned that Mary Winkler might possibly have been dealing with some issues stemming from the Church of Christ’s oppression of women - that maybe the COC’s demeaning (my opinion) policies towards women had something to do with her resorting to something so extreme and out of character.

The post generated lots of comments, and today I received the following email from someone named Brett.

“I am sure that you meant no harm in speculating over the motive of the wife who murdered her church of Christ minister husband. However, your comments came across as cruel and callous. I am sure this is not the image you want people to have of you. It is truely tragic when we feel the need to kick those who are already down. Have you know sympathy for the family who lost their son? Have you not thought that people of varying religious backgrounds murder their family members because they are simply disturbed? How many of those professing to be practicing Catholics or Baptists etc have been guilty of murder? By the way, have you considered the fact that Psalm 33:1-3 is part of the Old Testament? Are we bound by commands and allowances of the Old Testament? I am sure that you no longer offer animal sacrifices or refrain from eating pork and other unclean meats. Why quote commands and allowances given under the Old Law? I hope in the future you refrain from mean spirited comments that only inflame and injure the families who have experienced a loss.”

It has been enlightening to me to read all the comments on my initial post.  Cruel, callous and mean-spirited?  Aw, come on!  Is there anyone who reads this blog even occasionally who thinks that?  I was relating a personal experience and opinion, and I prefaced it with how badly I felt about the whole situation - and even later (days before this email) I wrote another post about how the focus should be on the three girls and the heartbreak they are experiencing as a result of what their mother did to their father.

And should we just throw out the Old Testament?  Is there no value or guidance for us there?  Is that a COC belief, too - that the Old Testament has no merit?  Curious perspective.

So this cruel, callous and mean-spirited blogger who has no sympathy for people who’ve experienced a loss and who just wants to inflame and injure people who are already hurting will now close this post.
